FAQ
What should I expect in psychotherapy?
I know that finding a therapist and starting psychotherapy can feel like a daunting task. Knowing what to expect can help put your mind at ease.
This is how therapy tends to unfold
-
One
We arrange a free phone consultation to make sure we are a good fit to work together. You can share a bit about what’s going on in your life that led you to seek psychotherapy. I can answer any questions you may have about my training, approach to therapy, or any hesitations that you have about therapy.
-
Two
If we’re a good fit, we will arrange a first session. Prior to this session, you will fill out an intake form that provides me with some history and details about your mental health challenges. The first session is used to get to know you and the details of what’s brought you to therapy.
-
Three
Within our first few sessions, we will set goals that you would like to work on.
-
Four
I will draw on multiple evidence-based modalities to support you in creating the change that you desire. I want to reassure my clients that revisiting their pain in therapy is never as painful as living through it the first time. Making sure that you are safe is my number one priority throughout the entire process.
-
Five
As your concerns start to dissipate, we may decrease the frequency of your visits, then terminate therapy with the knowledge that I will remain available for any ‘tune up’ that you may need.
How are sessions being conducted throughout the Covid-19 pandemic?
Currently all sessions are held via secure video conferencing. This will continue for the immediate future until it is safe for in-person visits to resume.
What can therapy help me with?
Oftentimes, people come to therapy when they are struggling through anxiety, depression, low mood, trauma, and other mental health challenges. This also isn’t always the case. Sometimes people seek out counselling to help uncover a more purposeful life, improve relationships, gain insight, and otherwise improve the quality of their lives. Whatever your reasons for therapy, I look forward to creating a safe and welcoming environment for you to come and embark on that journey.
Do you offer consultation calls?
Yes! I offer a free 15 minute consultation call for you to learn more about my services and to see if we’re a good fit to work together.
Your website mentions Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) a lot. What exactly is EFT?
EFT is a well researched and highly effective approach to psychotherapy developed by Dr. Sue Johnson. It draws on the science of adult attachment. People are seen as innately relational, social, and wired for intimate relationships. Emotion, and emotion regulation, are central in the therapy process as they shape individuals' experiences, as well as our interactions in relationships. I integrate EFT with other evidence-based modalities, and work from a trauma informed lens.
How long should I expect to be in therapy?
The therapeutic process is different for everyone. Length of service is something we can discuss in your first appointment, and is always collaborative. We will also check in often on your goals and overall progress to see what makes sense moving forward.
I’m experiencing a mental health crisis. What can I do?
Psychotherapists are not crisis workers. If you are in an acute mental health crisis it’s important that you seek support right away. You can call Crisis Services Canada at 1-833-456-4566 (24/7) or text 45645 (4 pm to 12 am ET), call 911 or go to your hospital’s emergency room.
